Wimbledon 2022: Rafael Nadal wary of Nick Kyrgios’s threat in semis – Going to be a big challenge
No.2 seed Rafael Nadal reckoned that beating Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in the semi-final of Wimbledon 2022 won’t be a cakewalk by any stretch of the imagination.
On Wednesday, Nadal, who is seeded No.2 in the grass-court tournament, had to fight out of his skin to beat USA’s Taylor Fritz at Centre Court. In the end, after a grueling five-setter, Nadal came up trumps.
Nadal clearly said that he can’t afford to drop his guard against Kyrgios, who defeated Cristian Garin in the quarterfinal.
“First things, I hope to be ready to play. That’s the first thing. Nick is a great player in all the surfaces but especially here on the grass, he is having a great grass-court season. It’s going to be a big challenge. I want to be at my 100 percent to give myself a chance. That’s what I hope to do,” Nadal said.
Nadal also lauded Fritz for giving him a run for his money and making him work hard for every single point.
“I enjoy a lot playing these kinds of matches. It was a tough afternoon against a great player, so all the credit to Taylor for playing great the whole season. It wasn’t an easy match at all, I am just very happy to be in the semi-finals,” Nadal said.
During the game, Nadal also took a timeout after he had issues with his abdomen. The veteran admitted that he felt like throwing in the towel plenty of times during the match.
“The abdominal issue isn’t going well. So, I had to find a way to serve in a different way. A lot of moments I thought I won’t be able to finish the match, but the court and energy is something else,” he added.
Back in 2018, Nadal played a thrilling five-setter against the legendary Roger Federer. Nadal said that he has thoroughly enjoyed his rivalry with the enigmatic personality from Switzerland.
“It was a long time but of course, it’s impossible not to remember that final with Roger and another semi-final in 2019, all the most special moments we shared together. on this court, we played a couple of the most important matches of our career.
“In that fact, throwing back to 2008, it was difficult to imagine that in 2022, I would be here in Wimbledon playing.”
