Australia assistant coach Daniel Vettori is happy with the scheduling of subcontinental tours ahead of touring India in 2023. Australia are scheduled to take on the Rohit Sharma-led side in February-March next year. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy has turned out to be Australia’s biggest Test event of the year in the recent era, and is also the one that Australia have not been able to crack.
“In a lot of ways it’s been nice to have a subcontinent tour of Pakistan, then here [in Sri Lanka] and build towards India,” assistant coach Daniel Vettori said. “Conditions will be very different. We will get a lot of variation from venue to venue.
Vettori, one of best spinners to ever grace the game of cricket, said that the conditions India vary from ground to ground and that’s why Australia would not be going in with just one set plan.

“You could get anything in between [the pitches in Pakistan and Sri Lanka]. If you play at Mohali it is going to be flat, if you play at Wankhede [in Mumbai] it could turn square like here. You can’t just have one plan.”

In the recent times, Australia batters have tried to adapt to the conditions in the tour, and play different games at different situations. While against England, they were rapid in their approach at home conditions. They chose to weather out patiently, scoring at a slow rate, and when they arrived at Australia, they chose to proactively employ the depth of the crease. Vettori said that strategically, Australia would like to employ their sweep shots more in the subcontinent and take it from there.

“In a lot of ways sweeps can be blocks over here,” Vettori said. “There have been plans for individuals to use whatever they feel comfortable with, and to be as proactive and brave as they could with it,” Vettori added.
